Lecture by Bárbara Boloix on “The Last Female World of al-Andalus: Nasrid Women”

This Friday, May 14 (6:00 pm), Bárbara Boloix will give a lecture on “The Last Female World of al-Andalus: Nasrid Women,” within the Seminar “Women through Law and Family Codes: Legal Tradition and Current Problematics,” organized by the Area of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Alicante. In this lecture, the Main Researcher of our Project will address the ways of life of the Nasrid women, taking into account both the gender criteria and the multiple factors that determined their existence throughout the history of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada (13th-15th centuries).

Lecture of Bárbara Boloix on the Andalusi Women of the Alpujarra

This coming Wednesday, May 12 at 6.30 p.m., the Arabist Bárbara Boloix Gallardo (Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies of the University of Granad) will offer an online lecture titled “The Andalusi Women of La Alpujarra,” in which she will address several issues related to the ways of life of women of this region. This talk is part of the Conference Program “I Encounters with Aben Humeya,” organized by the Center for Historical Studies of the Lecrín Valley and the Alpujarra (https://www.cehval.es/).

During her lecture, the Main Researcher of our Project will tackel both general and specific aspectcs of the existence of women of the Andalusi Alpujarra, considering the specificities of this  territory as well as the conditions of life which were typical of rural areas in Medieval times. She will therefore try to get us familiar, from different perspectives, to this broad social group of our Islamic past, from which many aspects existing in this emblematic and millenary region today can be explained.

Bárbara Boloix takes the women of the Alhambra to the TV program “Gardens with History”

This coming Saturday, February 6th, at 18:00 h. in TVE 2, Bárbara Boloix will participate in the program “Jardines con Historia” (Gardens with History) which will be dedicated to the Alhambra of Granada.

We would like to thank Timezoneproducciones and Arturo Franco for the chance of participating in this beautiful initiative, as well as for their professionalism during the recording process. Thank you also to the Board of the Alhambra and the Generalife for facilitating the making of at the beautiful Patio of the Harem, where the Dār al-nisāa’ or Residence of Nasrid royal women was located in the 14th century; a place from where they could see life passing and contemplate the gardens of the Alhambra without being seen. Barbara Boloix’s online conference on Daralhorra’s Nasrid Palace

This afternoon (Tuesday December 1 2020),at 19:00hr, Barbara Boloix will initiate the online conference in the “The Nasrid Palace of Daralhorra, a Nasrid women’s property”, within the Cycle of Granada’s artistic historical heritage.  Throughout his intervention, the PI of our project will analyze the multiple relationships of this building with the world of women, taking a tour of its history, its architectural arrangement and the different functions it performed during both Islamic and Christian times, all of which are linked to the female presence that developed within it.

Bárbara Boloix participates in the online seminar “Written tradition and oral transmission on holiness and holy women in Islam: works in progress”

The IP of our Research Project, Barbara Boloix, participates this Wednesday, November 18th in the online seminar “Written tradition and oral transmission on holiness and holy women in Islam: work in progress”, organized by the Universities of Salamanca and Alicante. Her presentation, titled “Footprints of the Meriní Sultans in the Religious-Sufi Building of the Fes Dynasty”, will analyze the buildings of a religious-Sufi nature and function that the Meriní emirs erected in honor and memory of some women in their family. Likewise, throughout her speech, she will examine the legitimized purpose of this constructive policy with which not only were these women honored, but with which the religious leadership of this line was also increased in lands of Islamic West.

On June 3, 2020, the Athenaeum of Granada issued, within its section on “Feminismos”, a reposition of Barbara Boloix Gallardo’s conference on “The Nasrid Woman: Life, Presence and Identity”. This reproduction, which was made by live video conferencing, was followed after a debate between the said researcher and the online audience on the content offered and the progress made in this regard during the development of the NAZAMER project.

Barbara Boloix participates in “Talking history” on Nasrid sultanas

The PI of our project, Barbara Boloix Gallardo, participated today (Sunday, June 21) in the program “Talking History”, which wasbroadcasted by the radio news station of Ireland. In this program, dedicated to the Alhambra Palace in Granada “The Alhambra: a History”,, the aforementioned researcher spoke precisely  about the role played by the Nasrid dynasty´s women in many aspects of the Caliphate’s public life, such as the famous Sultana Fatima, as well as some of the identifying characteristics of Nasrid slaves in the Peninsula. Barbara Boloix’s Conference on Umayyad Women in Medina Azahara on International Women’s Day

On the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day 2020 (8M), the Madinat al-Zahra Archaeological Site organized a conference called “The Female Branches of Power. The women of the Umayyad court of Córdoba”, organizad by Bárbara Boloix Gallardo (University of Granada),  at the Medina Azahara Museum. As happened in other political contexts of the medieval Islamic world, in the Umayyad dynasty of Cordoba (viii-xi centuries) different women transcended the private areas of their feminine status to enter the spheres of power, and these women were also fundamental active agents in the growth and consolidation of the family tree of this line in lands of al-Andalus. Throughout this conference, NAZAMER’s IP toured some episodes of the history of the Andalusian Omeyas in order to highlight the important role played by some women in the court of Cordoba.
